It's a west coast book
The book is really great, and I hate to sound petty, but most of the plants are on the west coast, so living on the east coast our kids won't see them on our side of the country. Living in Maryland, I wouldn't have bought it had I known it was written for kids on the west coast.
“In the beginning we ran like maniacs.”
We were very excited to read this book. It was beautifully illustrated and had a wonderful mix of both fiction and non-fiction elements. I however can’t get past the author’s use of the word maniac. There are many other words that could have been chosen that don’t carry stigma and negative connotations.
Eh. We didn’t care for the formatting.
The book is cute but extremely hard to read. Not a bedtime story book. My daughter wanted to me to read every single item and some of the words didn’t even really have words describing the story so I had to narrate. Which I know can be a food way to connect and talk with my kid but not when I’m trying to read the last book before bed. Maybe for older kids who can read or don’t need as much help engaging with the book. Not for my struggling reader.
Delightful book you can read 100 times or more with your kiddos!
This delightful book is full of adventure, fun, poetry and magic. My kids always ask me, "Which character do you want to be?!" Each character has her own way of being in the world and kids love this. They also love the non-fiction elements - getting to learn about plants and animals. The author is very skilled at delivering this non-fiction information in a gut-splitting, hilarious way. This book is so layered! You can read it 100 times and still find new aspects to enjoy. OUR FAMILY LOVES THE HIKE.
Cute book! Educational too!
Really cute book! A wildlife journey with the beautiful PNW as the backdrop. There are many animals and plants with labels on each page. Cool book! It’s long so a child might not be into reading the whole thing but it was very special for me(an adult) being from the northwest. Great purchase.
Awesome
Beautiful and educational book, my daughter has had me read it about ten times a day... And I don't mind looking at it/reading it ten times a day- that's how good it is! It is an inspiration to go outside and nature journal!
Beautiful illustrations, story is less than engaging
I bought a bunch of nature books to help my daughter get excited about being in the outdoors, and this book is one of them. I was overall disappointed with this book. Pros: Beautiful illustrations with diverse characters! Cons: The "story" was difficult to read and did not engage my 4-year-old. It was not good for a bedtime story. If you're looking for a book about hiking with great illustrations for kids, I highly recommend "Let's go on a hike!" instead. We love it for bedtime.
A Great Book! Beautifully Written and Illustrated!
I love this book. I love the beautiful, lyrical storytelling, the details/nature identifiers that fill every corner, and the overall message of encouragement to get out there and enjoy the world outside. I would definitely recommend.
Our toddler LOVES this book!
Our son loves this book and we love reading it to him! We got the book when he was 15months. He started engaging with the pictures and pointing for us to tell him what something was. Now at 22months, he knows the names of all the characters, different flowers, animals, trees! He isn’t as interested in the books journal portion, but I foresee him getting into it as he gets older. The story is simple. The illustrations are beautiful. It feels like you are reading through a scientist’s field book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! We just ordered another book by this author - Cycle City. Can’t wait to read it!
Great book to introduce the joys of hiking!
My two grandsons, ages 2 &3, love this book. I bought it to get ready for our vacation near Mt.. Rainier.. The story is minimal which allows us to talk about all the things that you can see on a hike. Having lived in Seattle for a number of years and introduced our children to the joys of hiking in the mountains, this book captures that experience wonderfully. There are pages from a character's sketch book at the end and I can imagine, in the future, having them color in the items they find on hikes.
